Porsche ID for a dummy

Post by spiffy » Wed Aug 16, 2006 8:19 pm

I saw a sweet air cooled porsche parked at my work....it looked nice and flat and long with a long wheel base.....could anyone bring me up to speed on how to identify Porsche years/models....that thing looked pretty cool...except for the janky bus exhaust ](*,)

Well, the 912 is somewhat reminiscent of the old 356. Bubbly in the back long sloping nose. The 911 is the same really. They are exactly what you think of when you think Porsche. The 914 on the other hand is an odd looking little car. I mean that in a good way though. They were a mid engine car. I always think of them as the car that you can't tell if it's coming or going. The "cockpit" is centered to the car. It has almost equal sized front and rear ends, if that makes sense. Sounds like you may have seen a 914. I'll try to post some pics of my buddy's 912 if I can figure it out.

It's been awhile, was the engine in the 912 the same as 914?

The early 912 had different engines than the 914's. That engine was more like a 356. The one year only 912E (1976) had a T4 914 engine in it.

Very nice. My mom had a couple when I was little. It was crazy going grocery shopping with her. She'd belt me in and then stack the groceries around and on me.

I can't imagine working on them is much fun, but tell me if I am wrong.

adjust the valves is hard, any other work and its 4 bolts and drop the engine/tranny combo to do work. Heck, thats how the factory/dealers worked on them!

Tons of 911 parts fit so swaps for modern parts is easy. Even a 3.6L 911 fits in with 250hp.

spiffy and all others.....I have a 1969 912 and a 1974 914 in addition to our bus Bob and I recently got a schweet 69 Ghis Coupe for Carman. We have many photos of them in our gallery at The Samba. Take a look...search the Gallery using our screen name - flyawaydesigns. If you dig Porsches, maybe you should plan to attend the Parts Obsolete Campout in McMinnville, OR on June 27, 28 and 29. It's a combination Porsche and VW event - see the pics in the gallery I mention above. We go every year and will be bringing Bob and Mona - the Ghia this year. Let's talk about it when we get to Maupin.

VWs are way cool....but Porsches are VWs on steroids.....many smiles per mile. You should see my 914 up close....2.0L Type IV, FI, Permatune ignition, mild Webcam, 10.5:1 compression, lightened flywheel, bored throttle body, 140 lb springs, short gearset, limited slip differential, 107HP, and way more......wish I had that same engine in Bob....it spools up QUICK and has torque like you can't believe....gives Mustangs and Corvettes a headache between stoplights :)
