Rust removal and painting

Post by calivw78 » Fri Jul 28, 2017 12:08 pm

Hola IAC. Long time no post. I've started getting back into the swing of working on the buses again and am tackling the sliding door on our Westy. First order of business is to remove the rust along the bottom edge and in an area where there is some body damage. My goal isn't to straiten out the dents, at least for now, but considering I've never done body work or paint I thought I was see if anyone wanted to chime in my approach. My plan is pretty straight forward.

1. Grind off rust
2. Prep area for paint (clean with spirits, tape off)
3. Several coats of Rustoleum. As close to body color as possible.
4. Several coats of clear

Thoughts? Below are a couple pics of what I'm dealing with.

Peace, Troy

Troy, you want to be thorough. Remove inner door panel and clean (compressed air is great) the crap out between the inner and outer sheetmetal that comprises the door. Make sure all drain holes are clear at this time. Then shoot Rust-Catalyzing Spray Primer down between the panels and use compressed air to drive it in better than any body shop will ever do. Then you can do whatever body work is needed on the outside surfaces.
