Ah, that's right, I remember seeing those on their showroom floor a few years ago. Many people swear by Gary's work on earlier engines. Good luck!

Does anybody know if those adjustable Wito shocks are rebuildable? I can't find any info online.

That is a rarified question for this forum. Can you contact the manufacturer?DurocShark wrote:Does anybody know if those adjustable Wito shocks are rebuildable? I can't find any info online.

Yes, machine for bearing inserts.

Thanks, I think so too. And yeah, this case has been worked over at least once before, judging by the case savers installed. ;) So who knows how well it was done, how long ago, etc.Amskeptic wrote:You got yourself a peach, there.DurocShark wrote:Rimco is supposed to be able to grind the cam journals for bearings. Re: Looks like I might have an air cooled again...
$800? A steal! Those heads look great.
One suggestion: Go with the 83MM big bore set of P&C's - AA makes one. I put a set of 83's on a 40 horse I owned a long time ago. Takes the displacement to 1385 and even with a stock 28PICT provided a huuuuuge (gag...sounding Trumpian) difference in power. Finding a performance exhaust is a bit difficult for the 40s but there are some.
I had mine in college and with slightly oversize tires on the rear I could indicate 85 mph on some sections of I-5. Would I drive a swing axle bug at that speed today? Heck no. But it was fun then!

Re: Looks like I might have an air cooled again...
Cam bearing inserts didn't show up (from VW) until the 1300 in '66, before that the cam rode directly in the case. Later factory replacement cases and factory rebuilds had inserts (even 40HP/1200), and companies like Rimco used to cut cases for inserts even back in the day.DurocShark wrote:What the heck? 1200's ran the cams with no bearings?

Re: Looks like I might have an air cooled again...
Finally got stuff home. Here's the case. I have two questions:
-What the heck is the second serial number stamped on the stand?
-Do I need to do anything else to it before I drop it off at Rimco to get cleaned, etc?

Hey there! Just want to make sure you know Rimco moved recently...
020 is probably .020" (first oversized) bore marking, though I have no idea about 866. Maybe it was case number 866 in their shop notebook at boring time? Any idea who the last machinist was?

Re: Looks like I might have an air cooled again...
Yeah, they're actually closer to me now. When they were in Industry I was gonna have to take a really early day or a loooong lunch. Now they're in Orange, I can leave just a little bit early and hit them before they close.
That 020 makes sense. The bearings it came with (both crank and cam) are marked 025. So I'm a little confused. Sorry, no clue who did the work. No tags or receipts.

Re: Looks like I might have an air cooled again...
Finally did an inventory of all the stuff that came with the car. Unfortunately there is a LOT missing. Some highlights:
Engine:
-Cooling tin: Only have the cylinder head tin. Need EVERYTHING else.
-Charging system from the stand on up
-Exhaust: Everything
Body:
-ALL glass. There's nothing. Strangely, there's a box of seals.
-Wing windows and frames.
-Entire window mechanisms
-Door handles, latches, etc
-Exterior brightwork trim
-Running boards
-Hood and rear hatch mechanisms: Everything
-Headlight housings and everything
-Heater channel doors (found one)
Misc:
-Speedo
-Fuel gauge
-Fusebox and wiring harnesses
-Brake MC and reservoir
-Washer tank
-Wiper arms (found the motor)
-Steering column mounting bracket
I'm sure there's lots more I don't have, but this is my first run at a checklist .

Re: Looks like I might have an air cooled again...
Just dropped the case at Rimco. $45 for cleaning and inspection. It *was* machined and bored out for the cam bearings already, but not by Rimco. The oxidation on the mating surfaces of the two case halves has me the most worried, so they're going to see if the surface can be cleaned without cutting so it doesn't have to be align bored again. They'll mic the bores too to make sure I have the right sized bearings.

Re: Looks like I might have an air cooled again...
Picked the case up today. They just did a "hot tank" (they don't actually hot tank anymore) and inspected. Said it's a great case and a good base for my build. They suggested I just use a copper wire brush to clean the oxidation. I'm down with that. SharkDaughter needs something to do... ;)

Re: Looks like I might have an air cooled again...
I realized I never updated this...
The 1835 I built that's in my 68 Baja is destined for this car. It's in the Baja while I rebuild the 2180 that came in it. The 64 is *STILL* in that woman's garage. Title issues. Once I get those sorted I'll actually get started. I may still build the 1200 engine at some point, but that'll just be for giggles or as a spare if I do. I got the birth certificate for this car from Germany and the engine isn't the original, so it's not a numbers matching engine. If it was I'd be more into using it in that car. My mother in law is playing games about letting me work on it at her place, so I don't know what to do. It'll ultimately be my daughter's car, so I thought it would be a slam dunk. Apparently not. Sigh.
