April campout in Covelo!
This is a follow-on to the thread about usernames.
I'm thinking we could do a Covelo campout the weekend of April 28. I just checked and the average daytime high is about 71 then (these are historical records so the current average is probably 73...). This is the prettiest time of the year, with everything green and the rivers running full and usually lots of sunshine. Of course, last year I got stuck in the mud with the bus the last week of April, so we should play it by ear a little, but it would be a pretty good gamble. Also, the sooner the better!
Covelo is 559 miles from PDX and 565 miles from LAX, so hopefully we can make this a complete West Coast get together. I think we can probably accomodate at least 15 buses at our place.
Let's see who is interested in doing this!
Here is the location for Google Earth users:
Lat 39°45'41.22"N
Long 123°10'46.60"W
Here is a picture (shot on March 13!):
By the way, I'll be in Portland February 22 and 23, so maybe we can get together at the Lucky Lab on the 22nd to do some planning, if anyone in the Portland contingent would like to do so. (Sorry, not a Monday this time).

Same here, barring any unseen circumstances. That's a long haul, it's been a while!

I'll try to make it, looks like my kind of shindig.

Looks like a lot of fun!
I'd like to say I'm in, but I have committment issues.... (I did get married though, and have a steady job--maybe it's not a committment issue so much as I'm just wishywashy). But it does sound like a blast! If my wife isn't interested, any chance you all would mind a 3 year old tagging along?
Still got to attend to my brakes prior to committing to such a voyage.

Hambone, you're an activity waiting to happen. Have you looked at the cabin location? Look at all those trees. I think I see a river close by. I'm sure there is a trail that could use some Hambone TLC.

Doin the quick math says at least $180-200 (RT) in gas from Portland. $50 for beer(a conservative estimate). food $50+.
Nice journey, great location. Definitely something to ponder.

So it all started when I wanted to get better gas mileage....

Is that high desert/oak woodland country? Looks like dry lands. Any public land around there (forest service)?
I need old maps before I know the history of an area. Exploring is always a kick tho.

Environmentally, it's fairly typical of the drier western parts of NorCal and the North Bay .. the wetter parts are full of redwoods. Dry and hot in summer but not as dry as Maupin. If it helps, the whole region is described as a Mediterranean climate .. not as dry as Maupin but not as wet as the Willamette Valley. Oak, manzanita, bay laurel (aka Oregon Myrtle), some pine & fir, plenty of poison oak & blackberry vines.hambone wrote:Is that high desert/oak woodland country? Looks like dry lands. There's a huge chunk of forest service in the mountains, but I'm not seeing anything immediately around Covelo on the map I've got (old rand McNally roadmap).
