Re: Retitled: Gypsie's rebuild
I got home and double checked all the connections, uphooked the charger, took a deep breath, fixed a motion activated sprinkler to keep the deer out of the garden, reattached the neighbor's front bumper after she pulled a tad too close to the tall curb at the grocery store, took another deep breath... triple checked that all the electrical was hooked up right, manually activated the fuel pump to charge the fuel lines...asked my daughter if there was anything she wanted me to fix to which she looked at me like I was crazy...took another deep breath and....
it fired right up. idle was way up but adjustable. Had to crank it way down (about 3/4 turn from seated). It clattered like all get out at first and my innards went all soft and quivery...until the lifters pumped up and things quieted down.
I may need to fill one of the holes in the throttle plate but at this time I can turn the idle down and up.
I took it for a little 5 mile circuit (some back roads some freeway) and it definitely has more pep. Temps seemed ok. Tonight I will retorque exhaust nuts, check timing, and take it for another drive with the LM1 hooked up to see where mix is sitting.
So far so good.

Yes!!!
The best navigators aren't sure where they're going until they get there. And then they're still not sure.

I've been holding my breath..exxhhhaaalllee. glad to hear all is well. So I guess I should pay more attention to details like head cc's, deck height, and compression ratio. Never have and been damn lucky so far.

Re: Retitled: Gypsie's rebuild
Hooked up the lm1 tonight and found that I am running a bit rich according to the machine.
Nice drive. Good thrust. Quiet ( I swapped out the transmission bracket that was rubbing with one I modified (read took a grinder to it...)).
Now the engine hangs from the rubber bushing in the bracket rather than pressed up against the frame. The engine hum really transmitted in the cabin. much quiter now.
It feels like it felt before I thought about cleaning injectors back in ought-nine.:

We'll see about mileage (snort...) but I am un-puckering by the minute.
much water has passed under this bridge:
In these past two years I have pulled the engine at least 4 times and swapped the heads with the engine in place.
Assembled a frankenengine from several other cadavers... chased the march hare down a hole and hallucinated that I had a dead tranny in the back of my rig...likely not.
Rather, it was the lobe polishing I did on the cam when I put in new lifters on old cam. Metalurgy is far out...
Totally missed the ball on taking in the full scope of the process to best understand the variables.
Corrected that
I didn't do everything that was suggested, but I am thankful for each comment if for nothing more than it's intended purpose of "helping out".
Time, energy and resources have been invested in this venture. I am planning on getting some back in camping and the like...I am hopeful that things will continue to go swimmingly.
Amen.

It's just too much, dead trannys, lobe polishing, I'm overwhelmed by possibilities.
Congrats Stephan!
