That is a damn shame.
I hate the laxity of our culture when it comes to alcohol and driving.
I also hate the ranting stupidity in our culture as seen in the blog posts under the article.

As long as there are bars with parking lots people will drive. A plain & simple fact of life. It's a bit asinine that our government/society tells people that alcohol affects ones judgement...yet we all know(trust)the likelihood of someone saying no to driving after drinking??? It's akin to arguing with a drunk...you won't win. There is gotta be a better way than jail. Seems that's the answer big brother always lays upon us.

Let's hear it.

As for the drunk who can't say no to driving, his judgment was not impaired before he began drinking, and THAT is the time for the drinker to have his Plan To Get Home in place.

That would mean we have a perfect world. It would also mean bars could get rid of all their parking spaces for cars. Now if we could just come up with the perfect plan to put it all into place.

I am not going to allow this sort of cop-out fall over possum passivity. Alcohol and automobiles are a scourge of death and maiming to the tune of two Iraq wars every year, or three 9/11s every year, and when you see the destruction to people's lives, the lost parents, the kids in wheelchairs, the destruction of nice classic old Volkswagens and others, the exorbitant medical and social costs, and people can't find a fucking designated driver? Screw that. They can grow up. Use their adult problem-solving. They can find a way home!

I of all can sympathize more than anyone especially after having spent 18 years scraping people off of roadways due to DUI's. The problem is that stiffer fines and jail times have done nothing to eleviate the problem one bit. In fact deaths as the result of prescription drugs has now over taken all vehicle accident related fatalities of young people. And it's growing at an alarming rate. Treatment is a better and cheaper alternative in the short or long run.

Exactly. There is implicit permission to drink and drive, our judges and congressmen and mayors drink and drive, our laws treat drinking far more lightly than pot smoking and it is the last bastion of people who do not want "to be told what to do". It is not *about being told what to do* it is an attempt to legislate common sense. I love this moments. The showdown with your kid over "are you going to brush your teeth?" Look at that moronic power struggle over . . . something that should have no argument.
