I replaced the fuel filter. The hesitation is gone! The old filter was full of sand and rubber bits. The old filler neck was replaced when I first got the bus since it was crumbling so bad. Some of this stuff is probably bits of the old neck.

Do your clogged filters get this full?

Here's why.

I almost pulled the trigger on acquiring one of those filters last fall. Turned out that a new fuel tank was cheaper (for a Vanagon, anyways.)

Now, I'm reminded that my old '69 and '71 had mesh socks in the fuel outlet of the tank. Did VW do away with the internal mesh socks when they put fuel injection in the type II?

Yes. Lawdy yes. I have eaten small rocks spewing from my fuel line-to-filter.
