Folks, I have some consultations to deal with here in Atlanta area. So many stupid things after a crash.
Here's one. My driving glasses, which took some good glass shard hits, saved me potentially thousands of dollars of eye care/surgery, but I have to rustle up the receipt for their purchase to let company know what is an acceptable replacement value.
My noise-attenuating headphones, which saved me from going insane in the trashy noise of Starbucks, were smashed into junk inside of my laptop case, laptop itself is thankfully still booting.
My neck decided to absolutely torture me halfway across the country because the Caravan's headrest ergonomics were horrid and kept pushing my head forward.
Back is fine . . . if I don't move. It is my brain which keeps reading danger and spazzing out my brake pedal and steering wheel muscles. You get the wind and torrential rain last night, Sylvester? I was freaking out on GA 285 and GA 400. The Dodge had low profile wide tires with just the acceptable tread depth and a horrible braking shimmy, and I was all nerves, like a little old lady trying to land the shuttle.
I need to address some of these concerns, and need a couple of days to do so. I needd to finish registration on the Lexus and the BobD needs Hagerty Full Replacement Value Insurance .

Hi.
At the end of the Itinerary each fall, I have experienced a little let-down, as the vistas and adventures continue to trip through my mind while I have to readjust to staying in one place longer than 12 hours, and there would be my bus just sitting out there with a look of "when's the next one start?"
But this time is a vacuum, the loss of a loyal mechanical friend is hitting my psyche now that I am sitting in one place longer than 12 hours and staring at the relentless rain here in Georgia this morning. Maybe this is the time to just unwind and consider that which has happened. There is no explaining it, and my inner landscape has no desire to share the loss, it is too personal, too ridiculous from an outside vantage point, and it has triggered the ages-old nattering of my ancient parental scripts that used to bully me with "grow up! act your age! why are so obsessed with that old Volkswagen?"
There was a time when, if you had given me the keys to the BobD and said, 'here, it's yours," I would have likely been enthralled and driven right off in it, leaving my old bus sitting at home in its battle-scarred dowdyness while I vacuumed up the compliments of strangers gushing over its pristine perfection. But in this time of my life, I am inconsolable with the loss of that shared experience with that plucky old bus.
This is my lesson, and I do not know how to impart it, that the great beauty of perfection and youth and potential is indeed something to admire, but the shared paths and travails and defeats and victories and stupid dull moments of existential irritability and those towering small dumb rages that dissipated eventually with evidence of same left behind in scratches and dents from thrown tools, the soldiering through life saddled by ignorance on the way to wisdom, this is something all together beyond the admiration and aesthetic appreciation I once foolishly called love.

Thanks for sharing.
Been missing your presence a bit, but understand the need for some peace and distance.
Looking forward to your technical feedback as well as your passion in matters philosophical.
Set a spell, kick your feet up, wander the halls of your psyche, dust off them memories and ponder. We'll be here.

Dust in the wind....
Some things are greater enforcers of this ultimate truth.
Some tough jerky needs a long while of chawin' before swallowin'.
I know you'll make peace with this. You have a lot of bumpy miles under your butt Mr. Kellog. Your wise words have helped me immeasurably over the years, during some rather difficult times. I only wish I could repay the favor.
TIME WOUNDS ALL HEELS
and
GET BACK IN THAT SADDLE!

Elwood and I understand Colin. You are strong and beyond smart in so many things. If I lost my Elwood to some "Twit" as you called her,it would have put me in the looney bin.
Just pull out a Q-tip ever so often and spray it with some Gum Out and give those cute ears a cleaning, just like ol' times
The IAC and your visits have enriched my life in more ways than you can imagine
Really hope to see you on next years run, We will need your help as we both age gracefully
Love, B/E

Next year's run is raging up in me as almost a defiant tossed middle finger to the forces of destruction. This year's interrupted itinerary was awakening a realization within that I was building something.Elwood wrote:Really hope to see you on next years run, We will need your help as we both age gracefully

"building something", nothing. You've built something. You've built a unique society of friends that previously had little in common besides the Internet and Volkswagens. I, for one, find that these pages have become a part of my daily life. Why hello, James. Is the '59 safely back in your possession? I just drove one in Ohio last month.James Dwan wrote:Yes thank you for the knowledge and inspiration and the confidence building and even the dreaded pop quiz.
As I told you several times I am a permanent fixture on your itinerary even if there's nothing wrong with any of my VWs.
Happy trails

I was still rattled and gun-shy of dusk Cleveland urban traffic, when I drove Sean Gallagher's bus, but it was definitely Essence du Early Volkswagen, a good stout simple heart with crude rigid suspension manners, but light precise mechanical action.hambone wrote:What's it like driving a '59 after being so used to a late bay?
