Z, ...... boing!!! That was Barb. I never saw Devo or The Tubes, but I saw Warren Zevon open for the Dead. The hippies didn't know what to make of him, and sat on the lawn with backs turned while he shouted "what's wrong with you? is everyone on queludes?". The crowd jumped to their feet though, when New Riders of the Purple Sage took stage. They didn't like 'new wave' but sure were excited by cowboy songs (hehe), or maybe it was Bob Weir they cared about .
Glad things are better for your vehicle, Sluggo. I'll try to get my write up done soon.

This is a great story. It always struck me as wierd when Welnick joined the dead.Birdibus wrote:Z, ...... boing!!! That was Barb. you made me go to wikipedia, Russell. Welnick was in The Tubes, a San Francisco band, so he must have seemed like family to The Dead.
Warren Zevon has links to New York and L.A. I don't find any connections to The Dead in his wiki bio. He must have been put there by the record label as one of 3 warm up bands before the GD played. (Santa Barbara, Univ. of Calif., May or June of 1978). No wonder 'the family' didn't care for him. It was a very anti-commercial crowd during an anti-commercial era. 'Nu-wave' represented reasserted control of music by corporations, in opposition to the self control philosophy of The Dead. After Zevon hurled his insult, he was loudly booed. Apparently he was an alcoholic. Wrong drug.

Never really into the Tubes or the Glam thing. Except for The New York Dolls and early Bowie of course. Not a fan but I've been to a lot of Dead shows. I usually spent my time in the parking lot where the real party was.
