Ok, now.. where are we gonna go? Wrong time of year for Death Valley, plus that's too far anyway.

I've got a couple thoughts in mind if you'll entertain suggestions. Let me let 'em jell.

So. Would you rather
an adventure camp full of thrills and abandoned trail exploring, new territory etc.
OR
A nice mellow old growth style chill and drink beer camp at a place I've already been
?

Note: beer will happen regardless. :king:

This will be down in the Clackamas somewheres due to proximity and my general obsession with the area.

Note: me sitting still is not likely. :king:

How 'bout someplace with electrical hookups & a pool? :flower: Just messin' with ya...

I'll have a better idea what I'm feeling up for when we get a lil' closer to August. Lemmie chew on it for awhile...

Then how can I obscessively plan? :geek:

Truthfully, wherever we go will be an adventure. But it's either bone thru nose adventure, or mellow good roads and trout.
I have been mapping out a major historic trail that is now abandoned, north side of Bull of the Woods Wilderness. Used to be the main drag but hasn't been used since at least 1963. Pasola Mountain. But not sure of the quality of the camp.
Trail went NE along that ridge:
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=pasola+mo ... 4&t=h&z=14
(switch to Terrain view for better viewing)

other ideas are Fawn Creek (near the sausage festival grounds at Rho Creek), High Rock (an unused campground with tables etc. next to a spring, on the way to Hambone), or maybe even Plaza Lake up near Twin Springs.
High Rock would be fun. Signal Buttes nearby, and the peak once had a lookout. Heck they would all be fun! :drunken:

Should be able to make this weekend... all of those sites sound cool, Hambone! Do you have a reference for old unused campgrounds? Would be interested to find some here in Central Oregon.

My vote is bone-thru-nose-adventure :drunken:

There really isn't any concise reference, I am just entertained by history and go thru a lot of research and stumbling around.
Old maps are a great resource, but they are tuff to find. Let me see if I can dig anything up for Bend...most of my research has been in the Mt. Hood NF. Old trails and historic sites abound, mostly forgotten.

High Rock would be fun, Plaza Lake looks like it could be .. except maybe for that whole "steep climb down from the road" bit. Not because of the "down" part; the "up" part getting back to the road.

Ever been out 5830 towards (and beyond) Hideaway Lake? Outer reaches of 4635 (off 4630 between Ripplebrook & Lake Harriet)? Fish Creek Road or NFD Road 45, both of which cut off Highway 224 before you even get to Ripplebrook?

Just some stuff I've stared at on maps and never had the chance to explore...

Past Hideaway Lake is Cottonwood Meadows and Mount Mitchell, both fabulous places. It's a late summer camp tho because of skeeters.
Fish Creek Road was closed in '96 after those terrible floods. The whole valley was logged pretty heavily.
45 is Memaloose Road, pretty busy with goombas and kind of a mess. Close to town. Takes you to S. Fork Mtn. and Memaloose Lake though.
www.trailadvocate.org has trail descriptions for the active trails in the district, it's a good place to start to see what is still viable out there. But there are many places without active trails but worthy destinations. If you can aviod the clearcuts.
Black Wolf Meadows is really cool too, on the way Hambone and just below High Rock. Not sure about August skeeters though.

Come on, let's try High Rock. Not many camp there any more, not much info on the internet either. A good sign.
Lots of good exploring there too. Used to be a lookout on the peak above, and Signal Buttes are nearby. And there is a fresh spring right in camp. Also a CCC camp used to be nearby.
We do have time to decide tho. I just git giddy. :blackeye:
There is also a vintage outhouse up there that needs floor repair. I wonder if we could bring some plywood and handsaws up there and fix it? Don't want to fall thru the floor tho. :pirate:

Here's a map: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source= ... 2&t=p&z=15
It's actually on the old Abbot Road too, though it's in better condition than the Hambone side of things.

Works for me .. I just got giddy thinking about places I've looked at on maps and wondered about. Hadn't heard that about Fish Creek; the road(s) still show on all the maps I've got access to, and there's damn little information online about that area to begin with.

Outhouse needing repair? Sweet! Plywood I think I've got, if not it's cheap enuf. It'd probably be worthwhile to cut some smaller panels with a power saw while we're in civilization and trim to fit in the field. Long cuts in plywood .. suck. Making long cuts in plywood that're *straight* sucks even more.

Paint? New seat? Trip up to scout the outhouse condition beforehand?

I can stop on the way to Hambone and take some pix and basic measurements. It's been bugging me for a year now! And of course the FS doesn't care. They just take the camp off the grid. At least it's not trenched like Twin Springs man what a waste. Lookout Springs too.

It's a nice little handcrafted building, painted white. Probably from the 30s, maybe a bit later. It'll be nice to fix it so it doesn't get torn down.

They trenched Twin Springs? F**kers. It didn't seem too misused when we were there a couple years ago except for the trash, and until "redneck" is an extinct subspecies there isn't much we can do to prevent it. Should we aim there for Labor Day and bring shovels? :cyclopsani:

Pics and measurements would be good if you're willing to stop & do that.

Apparently it's a big tank trap. Ya know, I really thought about that. How many people would it take with shovels to reopen the road down there? What a terrible waste of a wonderful camp that saw thousands of years of continuous use. I found obsidian flakes down there. Lots. And Indians haven't used the camp since the 1850s, maybe earlier.

2 of us couldn't do it. But I'll bet a team could do it. It would be a worthy project too. Man would I love to reopen that road. That is one of my favorite camps besides Hambone.

Forest Service told me "well you could still walk down there" after I gave them a hearty WTF....
