SE Oregon Anyone?

Post by gorge runner » Fri May 14, 2010 8:09 am

Hi All,

I'm pretty sure I'll be heading to SE Oregon in mid-June for 6-8 days. The final destination will depend on snowpack, which as I understand, is still pretty good. The likeley places are on the pa below. The most likely places will be Hart Mt. Antelope Reserve and the Alvord Desert just north of Fields OR.

Here's the Map

From PDX, its a solid 8 hour drive to Hart. Mt. My usual route is PDX to Bend then to the HWY 31 junction near LaPine, then to 395 and on to Lakeview. From here, its about 35 miles to Plush and 20 more to the camp grounds at the reserve.

Hart.Mt should be very nice in mid June. There is abundant wildlife here and the hike to the rim delivers a stunning view of the Warner Wetlands and beyond. Elevation of the campground is about 6300ft and frost is possible even in the summer

Most likely the Steens road will be closed at this time of year. The elevation fo Fish lake is about 7200ft and the top of the Steens is about 9200, so the snow can linger well into July and access may be by foot only.

So, another possible destination is the Alvord Desert --- 5000ft below the Steens rim. Its much warmer here, wide open and quiet.

Let me know if you might be interested.

It's not "air-cooled", but it does have an air compressor. Does that count?

Some of my favourite lands, those. I've traversed (well, driven past) :cherry: the Alvord Desert on many an occasion en route Las Vegas from Vancouver. (trade show addiction, not gambling)

They call US 50 "The Loneliest Road in America". But then, they haven't driven OR 140. I won't be able to accompany you on this run, but I wish I could.

Hey Gypsie,

I've been teaching on Monday evenings since January. Thursdays work for me, sometimes. Anyways, you have a few weeks to get your rig sorted out and into the sage.

Hey Glasseye,

You have to stop in the Alvord sometime. If you need a reason to stop, call it a tradeshow very few people go to. ;-)

Going back to the Alvord for Labor Day weekend (Friday until Monday or Tuesday). Feel free to join. You'll see me and two syncro's about 4 miles due east of hwy 78 at the hot springs. Just take the access road onto the playa and head across towards the hummocks. Weather will be near perfect. No reservations necessary.

Yes, yes, I know its too far from home, but I thought I'd ask anyway. And yes I didn't give everyone three months notice. But it's a totally spontaneous trip put together in just the last few days.

So, so tempting. If it wasn't for stucco, I'd be pointing Frito south. :pale:

False alarm!!!!

A client is asking questions, like "Hey, you got that proposal done yet?"

I have to wrap up a project proposal since it represents my income for the next three months. So, I just can't be that far from my computer for the next few days, maybe in a week or two. I'll take pictures then.
