Where you going, dude?
Northern Wisconsin and the U.P. somewhere's. Looking for adventure and free camping.
If you get to Ironwood, make sure to check out Copper Peak Ski jump.

Porcupine mountains are fun, too. You probably already know all this, I just like posting pictures of that crazy ski jump.

They have an elevator that goes part way up and then you get to climb up the rickety wood yourself to the top.

The elevator is new. The ski jumpers had to climb up the ramp with their skis from the bottom, there are 2 by 4 nailed to one side as a ladder.

They have one of these right by me in Fox River Grove, IL.

I would have problems just standing at the top, let alone skiing down it.

I've seen that thing. Doesn't go right into the river?

It's right by the river, but I don't think it goes into it. That would be kinda cool.

Copper Peak is for "Ski Flying"
"Ski flying" is the term used for ski jumping on hills designed for flights longer than 170 meters. Olympic jumps are rated at 90 and 120 meters. Think of those numbers as "par" for good jumpers. It's all about distance.

Built in 1969, Copper Peak remains the only ski flying hill in the western hemisphere. To our American ski jumpers, it should be like Lambeau Field, Yankee Stadium, Churchill Downs, or the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, yet no skier has flown from Copper Peak since 1994.
Everything about Copper Peak is big. The ski jump (inrun) is the largest in the world rising some 241 feet above the crest of a 365 - foot copper - bearing outcrop historically known as "Chippewa Hill." The upper start gate and observation deck of this mammoth, cantilevered, 300 - ton CORTEN steel superstructure reaches an elevation of 1782 feet above sea level, nearly 1200 feet above Lake Superior. This is one of the highest points in the State of Michigan.

Visitors to Copper Peak have the opportunity to "experience the feelings" of the ski flyer who is about to send himself down the 469 - Foot, 35 - degree inrun. In competition ski flyers accelerate to speeds near 70 mph (113 km/h) and launch themselves off the 8 - foot high take - off in a "leap of faith" and soar unassisted further than the Wright brothers first powered flights.

At least it had a guard rail. Not sure it would stop anyone, but...
