2008 South Fork Mountain Oregon camp trip - with pics

Post by hambone » Mon Oct 13, 2008 10:15 am

Anyone interested in goin on a quick Thurs morning - Friday afternoon trip this week? I haven't been out in a month and it's really getting to me. It'll be just me and Little Hambone, somewhere down the Clacky. Possibly the summit of South Fork Mountain, I hear you can drive to the top. Former fire lookout and not too far from Portland.
The weather is supposed to be glorious!

I'll probably be going here - South Fork Mountain, sometime Thursday morning. Damn I wish it were a longer trip but it's all I can swing right now.

I can't even tell you how bad we wish we could go! More reason for us to fix the last few things on Tobias that are keeping us from making impromptu camping trips!
My darling girl, when are you going to realize that being normal is not a virtue; rather it denotes a lack of courage.

Yes! Git that sucker fixed. You're on the right track. Generator, windshield repair, spare cables and replaceable parts. Engine seals. New tires when you can swing it, rust repair. Then trust yer gut and hit th road. It's going to be fun camping with you.

Tires-check
bank account crying-check
generator-going to look at one this weekend
windshield and everything else..... on hold for a bit

What do you think we could do for a temp. fix for the engine seal? Anything?

And I can't believe how well the bus handles with new tires! Wow, what a difference! I'm ready to take him off road!

You can try some duct tape/silicone very short term but you should be ok the way it is for the cold seasons. But get it fixed ASAP. You'll get some dust in the engine compartment but what can you do?

Oh!
A glorious trip!
Arrived in the misty clouds, on top of the world. After a few hours the clouds started breaking up, revealing itinerant peaks, to again dissapear into the mists. Then finally the sun broke thru, as it set behind the forever ridges. The sky turned a million different colors, continuously until we left.
Worked on an abandoned trail, picked up tons of trash, smiled a lot. Lots of history up there - old trails all over the place, and the ruins and debris of the old fire lookout (concrete footings marked 1931). Indeed, after parking, I noticed a gazillion old rusty nails scattered all around and under the bus. I had a very Zen and focused game of pickup-nails.
This will be a future Oregon-IAC destination. Perhaps next year though, at 5000' the snows will be arriving soon.
I'll post some pics later.
Glorious! :bounce:
