Adventures of a '78 Westy- (dial up users beware)..........

Post by Westy78 » Wed Apr 23, 2008 9:17 pm

Inspired by Hambone's thread on a camping year in review I thought I would post a thread of all of my adventures in the five years I've owned my bus.

My first long road trip. Two weeks through Eastern and Southern Oregon. Started off with a night in Union, Oregon at Catherine Creek campground.

Image

Then on into the Wallowa Mountains for three nights at Wallowa Lake campground.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Then up into Hell's Canyon for a couple of nights at Hat Point CG. This looking back down into the Imnaha River canyon.

Image

Image

This on the other side of the "hill" looking down into Hell's Canyon from my camp.

Image

Coming up out of the Valley that Catherine Creek flows through and into the scrub brush, heading south.

Image

The mysterious shoe tree along the Malheur River.

Image

Stopped by the Malheur Wildlife Refuge on the edge of the Steens Mountains.

Image

One of many bits of wildlife heavily outnumbered by the clouds of mosquitoes.

Image

Sunset in Frenchglen OR taken through the pop-top screen as going outside at that time would have meant being drained of plasma by the swarms of skeeters.

Chapter 2........

Second long road trip to Boise ID to visit friends and then three nights in the Sawtooth Mountains.

This was also Tosa's first voyage in the bus at six months old. Stanley Lake.

Image

Image

Image

At the top of the pass looking down into the Salmon River valley. 8000ft.

Image

Image

Then dropping back down through Sun Valley and back into the Idaho desert. Approximately 10 hours later I was back home in Portland after deciding not to stay at Farewell Bend CG on the Snake River.

Chapter 3.......

In 2005 we took a trip to Sheridan OR for the Northwest Mogfest to visit some German relatives.

Image

Image

Anyone recognize this rig? It's a lot bigger in person than it looks here.

Image

Image

More fun in the mud.

Image

Yes that is a VW.... Syncro Doka. That hill was nearly vertical at the top, and yes, they made it all the way up. Those things are damn impressive.

Image

Ahh, more mud. This guy wasn't so lucky...

Image

View from the luggage rack and another Syncro, this one an Adventure Wagon.

Image

Just because night falls doesn't mean the fun stops.

Image

The full turnout for the weekend.

The shoe tree! =D> I threw a very stinky pair up there on my way to Maupin last year.

Nice Jasan. I remember your saw tooth pics as they kind of inspired us to head out on our long trip a couple of years ago. I am starting to look at those "campgrounds" that we went to when we first got our bus and look at them as little hotels. The state park type campgrounds are nice but I think we have really started to get back to the out of the way places. Nice to have a shower every day or three out on a long trip though......
