I might be able to swing Memorial Day weekend, but have to work on Monday. .that is if Transporters are allowed.

Memorial Day sounds great to me.
I think we should be adventureous and try to find a decent spot next to a trailhead or abandoned trail, along either wilderness boundary. Actually there's an abandoned campground that's pretty cool called Twin Springs, just southeast of Salmon Huckleberry with trails all over the place. Near Squaw Lakes if you have a good map. I'd say about an hour from Portland. Anyone interested in exploring abandoned trails?

I really enjoy planning these sort of trips! Like to figure out how to do it full time...

I'm getting more and more psyched about this trip. I need it and the wife and kids will be in Cal EE for NEE ay (Austrian accent) visiting the folks.

Unless something major comes along I'm in. Anywhere sounds great to me!

Caravan from???

It's not far as the crow flies, but entirely different roads go to Hambone. They USED to be linked by the ancient Abbot Road but it's not a thru route any more due to a landslide. Interestingly, there used to be a trail from Twing Springs (which also used to be a primary FS guard station in the 30s - Plaza GS) to Hambone Springs, but was abandoned in the 50s/60s. Follows the Roaring River, but no one I know of knows if it's even down there any more. It's very wild country, as wild as yer gonna get in NW Oregon. I've followed the trail and cleared it about a mile down from Twin Springs but not all the way down to the river. It starts getting hard to follow after a ways but all you have to do is follow Plaza Creek all the way down. I've always been really curious about that Roaring River trail but haven't had the time to really get down there and it's really not a safe place to go stumbling about alone.

You'll need a Clackamas District map, but if we go to Twin Springs it's very easy to find. Long drive down a gravel road but not too steep really.
this place sells em:

I'll probably leave Friday nite and come back Monday early PM.

that site doesn't seem to have the clackamas one. do you think i could get one at andy and bax or OMC or some place?

ok, baring painting disaster on sat. i'll be rolling out sat. afternoon and i'll just head for twin springs. i feel like i could almost get there with just the maps off that topo site, but yeah, it'd be cool to be overprepared in that dept.

do you go out 26 and then down or do you come around the other side?

You go thru Estacada and keep on OR224 just past the NF boundary.

That site is just a link to the store located near Lloyd Center in the State of Oregon building. They have the maps in stock. Not sure of other stores, but maybe call around? The maps are cheap, like $6. Get one! Getting lost out there sucks.

Do thes maps have grid squares on them? Or are they just topo maps?

The ones with the grids on them are great because you can really pin point instead of using terrain association.

Yeah, grids and contour lines. MOSTLY accurate....
I've been transposing 1947 info on a current FS map. Lots of work, a lot has changed out there... I'd say 80% of the original trails are abandoned in the Clacky.

Can anyone pick up an extra map for me? I'll pay you.. really I will. Us Westsiders have a hard time making it across the river.

Anyone planning to leave Saturday am?

That sounds like a fun project. Do you use a map protractor to get down to 8 digit grid coordinates or kind of divide up the grid by eye ball and go from there?

Also fun to get a pace count so you can pull off fairly accurate 100 meter intervals.

For those folks with a good sense of direction, terrain association works really well, but sometimes it is nice to know a few more elements. :geek:
