Rolled back into the drive late last night. Bertha is having issues and it looked bad yesterday morning camped next to the Yakima River. Bah!

We didn't bring the digital still camera, only film (how antiquated) and haven't had a chance or the deck to be uploading any video. I did promise to post the poem I read, so here it is.

At Maupin


Long third gear climb,
nine in line
into the drizzly mist of clouds
that shroud
the tail-lights ahead,
patiently crawl with engine whine
over first pass and
onto the next,
Maupin on our minds.

The windy road winds out
with the trees now sparser pines,
landscape opening like the road
into long straight lines
gently dropping to the river
and destination.

Pulling into like kinds
of numbers dwarfing our nine,
parking the camp,
engines die
canopies fly
and gear spills out
into the grass.

Stragglers roll in,
frisbees fly,
helmetted kids
on like-sized bikes
coast freely by,
wandering bus to bus,
admirations mutual flies.

Potluck bread broken
slows the pace
as folks settle into
early summer evening
and gathering dusk
lantern punctuated oasi
as calm air reverberates with
strings struck,
brass blown,
and sweet voice raised
to a very fine day.

Yes, thanks Mark!, had a grand time, next year for sure, Bertha would have been an Alaskan liability.

As it was, Bertha logged 1,450 miles since we left for Maupin, most all trouble free, just the last day, and I still don't know what is up, but she got us home.

We'll post some photos at some point. Missed you Wayne. Thanks again to everyone, we had a blast!

Anyway, the gas station attendant in Maupin told me all about the bus that leaked gas and only managed about 2 gallons in. Two and two tells me this was Joseph's. Did he make it home ok?

He made it home alright. Damned if I know what the problem is, he left with the family on a roadtrip Tuesday (in the Villager) and I'm waiting for him to get back to find out what's going on.
