78 2L FI third fuel filter...

...in the past month, thanks to the rain that drips into my gas tank and makes that ugly brown stuff clog the filters )78 fi 2L west) and when i changed this one i had the brilliant idea to take out the fuel pump and 'clean' it, too- when all was reassmebled, the van would not start- i opened the fuel line between filter and pump to check for flow and it was- so wtheck is up

And have you removed the fuel tank, gotten the rust out of it and had it resealed? You should be replacing the tank hoses that go to it also at the same time....

Why would that be rain?
After you take all fothat stuff out, make sure you invest in a good gas cap. They are about $30 and worth it.

You may not be familiar with the role of just good ol' condensation. Any humid day will promote the appearance of moisture on exposed surfaces inside and out, like your windows even. As the condensation trickles down, the water will settle under the gasoline that is in the tank. In the crankcase, water from the inside surfaces will rust the strainer plate if you never change the oil.
You can eradicate the effects of condensation by keeping the tank topped off.
