rear engine hatch/door

Post by dingo » Sat Apr 23, 2011 9:02 pm

the rear engine door/hatch...the left side hinge : center cylinder (attached to door) keeps popping out of the 'hinge'...i see there is no center swivelling rod..just a crude, but effective sandwich of three cylinders...i have stared at it for hours..but no solution comes to mind..any ideas ?

It sounds like you're saying the hinges have no center pin that the hinge pivots around. For example, a house door has two hinge haves, and they are held in place by a round pin that enters from the top and sits inside the round areas of the two halves of the hinge.

If there is no pin, what do you suppose holds the halves together...?

correct...no center pin. Just a crude set up where the ends of the center section is slightly convex or concave , allowing for swivel. But once the shape is worn flat...

Well, now I can visualize it after seeing the photograph.

We could rewrite your original post for future searchers:

"The left hinge of my deck lid broke."

Then I'd reply:

Replace it with a good junkyard find. The phillips screws that hold the hinge both to the deck lid and the body of the car (found under the deck lid seal) may need lots of PB Blaster to break loose, do not chew up the screws.
Drilling out to replace the broken hinge pin is damn close to impossible.

^^^ That's nice to know.

Anybody have a guess if these could these be used on a '77 if the welds were ground off what remains of the factory hinges?

Well, you could get some from Interstate Used Parts

Link: http://www.interstateusedparts.com/

Or you can patiently wait for me to find some at the junkyards down here and send them to you for a nominal fee.
