Cracks in bondo!!!

Post by Sylvester » Thu Mar 17, 2011 11:50 am

Not recommended I know, but I am going to fill in the cracks of my bondo until the day I take it all out and do the metal right. Until then, what do you recommend infill the cracks with? I was thinking more bondo, but maybe that sandable epoxy is better? Any ideas?

Good question. Sealing the cracks will seal in moisture though. Maybe spray some of that rust catalyzing stuff in there first? And then a thin bead of silicone to seal it in until you can tear it out.

Sly, epoxy is pretty hard to sand evenly with the softer Bondo around it. I would try glazing putty...not the kind for house windows...the kind for thin skimcoats and feathering edges over Bondo before painting.

Just my humble opinion, but I would generally stay away from anything that says Bondo on it. Better stuff to use is Evercoat, and it comes in many varieties, with and without fiberglass. No matter what you do, you are going to have to sand the paint off and sand down into the old filler so the new stuff will stick and you get a uniform surface for new paint.

I bondoed over por-15 before with good result, then painted it. Sealed from both side. 4 years and some driving in the salt, that repair has held.

If they are pretty lightweight crack and no exposed metal on the backside, then I think Hippie's advice will do. Quick, dirty and effective.

Where do I get this? The auto parts store?

Well yes.
You can even use Bondo brand spot filler putty. Knead the tube before using.

How long ago was it repaired? I used a shovel to load it on the right rear panel of the Road Warrior, and it held for eight years. WUWT?

It's the Beetle that was wrecked/repaired a couple years ago, detailed on this very forum. Passenger side rear panel. Some were concerned with the amount of body filler used, apparently with good cause.
