The bottom piece is hooked and is the actual latch, I would wager, while the top piece I would wager slides over the bottom one when latched to lock the door from the inside. The top one looks askew, as giving mine a look both pieces seem to be lined up.

Hope that helps,

Let's focus and be specific. What part of the slider is not "latching closed"?
The rear latch? What is? or is not? popping out? The spring-loaded hinge at the rear?

The photographed part is the front catch. Mine has a slight inward bend on the lower tongue.

Notski. It lifts a bit. My sliding door is in pieces. I will double-check in the light.

The bottom piece lifts a bit, but does not retract. The top piece is retracted in the unlocked position. Mine still protrudes about 1/16, 1/8 of an inch or so.
