Single Bolt Exhaust Clamps............Anyone?

Post by Bookwus » Mon Jan 12, 2009 10:26 pm

Hiya All,

I'm looking for a source for single bolt exhaust clamps.

The exhaust clamps sold at my FLAPS are of the two bolt variety. These are fine for attaching exhaust tips on a Bug or the tailpipe on a Bus. But if you have ever had to try to wedge one of these two bolt clamps around the muffler/heat exchanger junction on an early Baywindow Bus made an even tighter fit due to the engine support bar, you'll know why I'm asking about a single bolt exhaust clamp.

I've seen these in the past (they more or less resemble a generator clamp but, of course, on a smaller scale) but I cannot seem to locate them now. Anybody have a lead on these clamps?

Hey Bob!

Take a look at 'em. If they are of the single bolt style, let me knwo ASAP. I have managed to find the single bolt style clamp and I'll order them if yours are the dreaded two bolt style. The ones I'm looking at are also German (Leistritz) and SOOOOO much easier to install. If you want/need I can order four instead of two.

I just grind the mustache bar at the exhaust pipes. Problem solved.

Lesee if I got this straight now..........................

You're advocating the actual modification of fine German VW engineering in order to use an ill-fitting aftermarket part?

The ones from Halsey are 1-bolt klamps.

Nope. You done dint git it straight.

I advocate the gentle massage of a fine original German part in order to more successfully intall other fine oem German parts like the original two part muffler/exchanger clamps with the TALL 10mm nuts even. Fresh engine mounts usually hold the engine high enough off the moustache bar that you can easily enough install those clamps. But older mounts settle. . .

Some searching around has led me to believe that VW actually used the one-bolt clamps on the production line. I have found them listed as replacement originals. Whatever the case, I am surely using them on mine.

Hiya Scott,

Oh...........I wish you had posted that up a bit earlier.

I went over to Halsey Auto (semiFLAPS) to get the clamps. As I needed the doughnuts and other hook-up stuff also, I bought the kit. 211 298 009A by HJS. Now this kit, other than the single bolt clamps, is exactly the same as the kit for which I paid $13.25 for at another FLAPS. Halsey's price? $20.00.

And your kit for $18 plus change includes the mating clamps for the warm air passage. I think Halsey put it to me.

Differant shops pay different rates to their suppliers, Halsey may have to pay more at his end, too. Just a thought. :flower:

Hiya Bus,

While that may very well be true, it has been my experience with Halsey (and judging by their reviews, I'm not alone) that they are not a service oriented facility. That is, they appear not to be of the philosophy of good parts at a reasonable price and good support service will bring back customers. They seem to be more of the get all you can and get him out the door sort of place.

Long ago I decided not to do business with Halsey because of the above. The only reason I was there a few days ago was that no other store in our area was carrying that specific part.

Nope. Not our German-built buses before 1971.

I gotta say in their favor, they usually have pretty good stuff. Also if something doesn't fit or I've changed my mind on those heads, they've taken it back right away. They do sell some crappy parts, I wish they would only stock the good stuff. It was cool being able to get a new case locally.
