Odometer repair.
Our 80 vanagen odometer recently died. It has a trip meter also. I reset the trip meter after buying gas and they have'nt moved since. The speedometer still works fine. Any help would be much appreciated!

Split plastic gear(s). Count the teeth on the split ones and replace them.

I had this problem with my Squareback (now Colin's) and was able to repair it on the kitchen table. It was indeed a stripped plastic gear, but the teeth were OK. Instead, the inside of the plastic gear was slipping on a metal axis to which it was once attached via a compression fit (I believe). A strategically placed drop of Gorilla glue solved the problem. A very satisfying repair, especially since I generally do not like futzing with little gears and springs and stuff.

These gears come loose from the shaft due to a little-known bugaboo.

The warning is against chronic in-motion resets. Over the life of the car like long before you bought it is where the gear loses its grip. . . like some of us who keep resetting in motion.bus71 wrote:I was parked when I reset it. Thanks for the warning, I may need to pass this along to my son. I wish my 71 had one as I really love this feature!
