Mine's all plywood with a whiteboard-like surface coating on both sides.

Thanks for all the help. I finished up the project this past weekend. It came out great.

Brass lamps! A grand scheme! See if Long's has any.

Uh, he only has brass synchronizers. They'd work with cool LED lenses in the centers.

How does the back bunk panel install? Gravity, bolted, trapped by other things? I am trying to lift it 1/4" for the plastic trim piece at the edge of the opening . . .

Mine just sat down in there...gravity would be the thing. Then, with the other board and mattress flipped down, with the Poppop pressing the works, it will not be going anywhere.

Say Ian, just got one more item to mention.

The flip-board in my '81 has a substantial galvanized steel C-channel capping the leading edge of the board (the edge facing forward when the bed is deployed) and spanning the whole bed edge to edge. The sides of the C-channel are about 20mm wide. It looks to be made of about 16ga. steel. One side of the flip-board is rabbeted to accept the C-channel.

I'm convinced that this metal channel is a major strength-enhancing part of the flip-board and is crucial in allowing it to support my overweight bulk up there.

I had no such C channel on the travesty that was my upper berth. I weight in at 196, and got up on my new affair. It will not be collapsing, unless I undertake activities such as I did in my 20's and 30's. I'd opine that I'm pretty safe.

I have two of those upper bunks. I'm replacing the one in my 78 with a refinished set. If you want my old set its yours. At least you would have all the correct hardware....
