Drain holes in battery tray?

Post by thesamwise4 » Mon Nov 07, 2011 6:14 am

Quick question.

I washed and cleaned the bus (77 Westy) yesterday and then noticed that some pools were developing in the battery trays. I lifted the batteries and noticed the the trays had no holes--on my 69, there is a hole or two in the depression in the tray.

Not sure if the PO tried to recondition these (they both look ok and are structurally solid), but it seems like not having a hole or two in the trays back there is a big problem.

Any reason I shouldn't drill one or two small holes through that metal to create drainage?

Thanks,
Dave

Yes, they should have drain holes. Adding them would probably be a good idea, especially if you
aren't able to park in a garage routinely. And if it's a daily driver getting lots of miles put on while
its raining.

Drill the holes and put a touch of primer and paint around drilled holes to prevent rust.
