79 westy alt harness question, xtra black wire

hey all,
my 79 westy became impossible to start over a period of about a week.
on inspection i found the brown wire from voltage regulator to alternator to be fried the full length of the wire. luckily the alt is fine, 14 volts on testing machine. new vr and harness from bus depot-the new harness has an extra black wire not on old harness. any ideas?
