I get so many questions about this place, so I decided to start a thread.
Located in bleak crow-riddled Portland Oregon, sitty of soggy roses.

I have a vacuum only on my bus, marvelous.

Nice! I may ante up and get the appropriate one on the Beetle.

A rebuilt distributor is like night and day.
I started with an 009, ran fine but you know the flat spot.
Then a used vacuum only for $30 wow what an improvement! But it kept melting the ground wire and would stall after downhill runs.
Finally I was gifted a Philbin rebuild. Runs like never before. Makes me wonder how many of my basket case VWs over the years have had worn distributors.

I've got an SVDA on there at the moment but I'd really like to get the correct retarding unit. The Bus has the original vacuum only and the Ghia has the correct dual vac retarding one... both run smoother / cooler than the Bug. There may be other factors too but I'm definitely on the stock bandwagon.

I bought a used, correct, DVDA to replace the incorrect DVDA on my Beetle. I sent it to Philbin for rebuilding and it came back looking better than brand new. It also (finally) fixed my high-idle issue. I can't say enough good about Mark and the Philbin folks.

Could you verify if they do rebuilds of the vacuum units? That would be splendid.

So, I'm also wrestling with a distributor problem in my '81 vanagon. Colin laid hands on it at the Lab as the likely source of my recurring issues. General impressions I've had is that given the age and all a rebuild is probably worth the money, in any case.

But, I'm trying to figure out if the dizzy I've got in there is original or not. My van's an Adventurewagen which makes me think it is a CA car. But, it has a different dizzy than my friend's 81 which is also supposed to be a CA car.

Is there a handy reference to find what's supposed to have been on there?

Take a look at the numbers stamped on the one you have and see how they match up. Have I said Philbin does excellent work? Oh, I guess I have. Oops, I've said it again. :flower:

Interesting, I seem to have the federal one. Makes me wonder if it was originally a CA engine, or if someone bought it out of state and took it to Ft. Bragg for the AW conversion work.

Thanks!

Got mine back this afternoon - rebuild cost $130 and it is all bright and shiny. Said that there was a lot of slop in there from nearly 30 years of wear.

Now I'm eager, and a bit nervous, about getting it back in this evening and seeing how it all goes. :bounce:

I'll have beer if anyone wants to come by for the big event. PM me for address.
