78 baywindow ignition , switch/button

Post by DonB. » Sun Nov 12, 2017 6:11 pm

I have a 78 baywindow ,switch needs replacing? When trying to turn key it hangs up more than not. When I replace the switch ,was wanting to add a starter button to make easier to start. What wires would I cut to add button. Is it worth it? Thanks in advance

What would be the purpose of push button start? Wouldn’t fixing the key/switch be the better option?

Don,

When you say it is hanging up, do you mean that the steering lock is preventing you from turning the key, or just that the starter does not engage.
Many people blame the switch for a balky starter, when it is actually the starter solenoid windings getting cranky with age.

IF your idiot lights flicker, or the engine stalls mysteriously, sure maybe ignition switch. But a balky starter, nope.
And you DO NOT want to mangle your VW with that Trophy of Idiocy, the push button switch. No, you really don't.

And you don't want to replace the whole damn ignition switch assembly with new keys even, you can get just the switch, just the switch.

Colin, thanks for your reply. the cylinder hangs up. could be the issue, have a new one on order. Once you get it to turn, cranks fine.
Will keep you posted on results.

So the actual turning of the key is problematic.

Have you found a steering wheel position that makes it easier, like giving a slight pull to the left or right to unload the steering lock pin?

Have you lubricated the steering shaft down past the lock assembly? Read this to help you take in the fun coming your way:
