just so I'm clear(I'm a bit of a mechanical newb) ... "hot start" means what I think it does... starting when the engine is hot... right? (vs cold start) ?

Yes. But understand that what the car thinks is "hot" may be different from your subjective sensation of "hot".
A cool day with a headwind is considered all hot annoying to your engine, whereas a muggy disgusting 100* day to us may be a relaxing day for your engine if there is a nice tail wind.
The starter reacts more to engine heat than the heat of the day.

gotcha. Thanks Colin. I don't think it's that then, as the non start happens after all day of driving, or after sitting all night in coastal BC rainforests. Clunk. clunk. clunk. VRoooom! :)
I'll see about pricing out a reliable rebuilder here in Vancouver. If it's too much, I'll just as well buy a new one, then maybe try to rebuild it myself.

Suggestion...
Get a hold of "Busdaddy" who lives in Surrey BC. He is a pretty sharp guy and knows everybody in BC capable of rebuilding a bus starter well. He could likely show you how to do it yourself.

I second that recommendation.
Also, a few (okay, three) decades ago when I lived in Maple Ridge, I had Mr. Sparks Electric on 227th St. rebuild my Corvair alternator. Did a great job. If he's still in business, I'd recommend his services.
