Doing baby stuff has intervened lol
All I have still is that the red/black and brown/white wires to the distributor aren't showing continuity - still have to work out why. I might get a chance today...

Took the harness out, removed the sheathing, all the wires looked OK, re-checked the continuity and now I have continuity *scratches head* Still won't start.

Re: 79 CA Hall Effect Ignition
what do you need in order to try out the federal style?
do you have a federal coil but no distributor, or vise versa, or need both?
if you want to pay shipping, ill pack up my spare dist/coil and send it over to aid in the troubleshooting process.
after some more fiddling with mine it finally fired up, so im confident I can roll with the electronic setup on this project 79 for a little while.

After fully and confidently assuring yourself that yes, indeed, you have continuity with everything plugged in, can you revisit the Bentley troubleshooting procedure?rallybug wrote:Took the harness out, removed the sheathing, all the wires looked OK, re-checked the continuity and now I have continuity *scratches head* Still won't start.
Again, I will rant that any troubleshooting procedure that states "substitute with known good unit" or "damage will occur in less than five seconds" is a procedure for components that I do not want to play with in an air-cooled VW.
Just started the BobD this afternoon after a five month sit. Immediate, smooth,
that's the Kettering Ignition System Way!

Re: 79 CA Hall Effect Ignition
Because Philbin has been impossible to get my distributor back from, and because im anxious to try and get this thing started for the first time in forever - I think im going to switch back to my points setup for now.
I just wanted to confirm - the only thing I need to swap out is the coil correct?
I have that same points setup dist and blue coil that I sent Rallybug to troubleshoot his.

Re: 79 CA Hall Effect Ignition
Whelp, it runs. =) I had to do a quick refresher course on dwell, it's been a while! It ran like crap initially, so I pulled the distributor and replaced and gapped the points and replaced the condenser. It now idles really well. I just need to fiddle with things to get it just right, but that's for a different thread.
Philbin is going to FINALLY send me back my electronic 79CA distributor, after weeks of back and forth calls to re-re-reconfirm that im fine with the retard line on the vacuum can being dead. (they can't get a new one and can't find anyone to rebuild it.) - I had been pushing to please install just a simple vacuum can in it's place so I don't have that giant one in there anymore but Tony is apparently hard of hearing and never got the message (or didn't want to hear it) so they are sending it back with the bad retard but good advance vacuum can on it.

Check EBay where there are NOS dual advance cans for $42.00 + shipping. I think I might need to grab a couple for the VWs that really need them, which many online vendors gloss over.

If those are from Cyprus, Greece, be aware that mine "didn't show up" last year and the seller refused to communicate with me after I asked for a tracking number or refund. Just make sure you file a PayPal dispute before the 45 day grace period is up.Amskeptic wrote: Check EBay where there are NOS dual advance cans for $42.00 + shipping. It does, but all the ones you listed seem to be reasonably compatible with a T4 setup. Some are better than others, but you can compare them fairly easily to the specs for your engine/distributor from Old Volks Home.airkooledchris wrote:Doesn't it matter *which* dual can you use though?

Re: 79 CA Hall Effect Ignition
Every day I am reminded why I despise human animals. So, yeah, if the seller is an actual fricken human being, you can modify the advance/retard by bending the post lightly in whatever direction you need to nudge it. If the advance is insufficient, you can also increase its range a tad by dremelling the limit cut-out IF you remember that every degree at the distributor is multiplied by 2 at the timing scale.airkooledchris wrote:I was thinking that this one might be close enough....

Also remember, there are sloppy people like me who do not care what the idle timing is, so a little extra retard just gives me an excuse to add airflow, a beautiful thing in a carbureted Volkswagen, an almost irrelevant thing in a fuel injected one.

Re: 79 CA Hall Effect Ignition
Note that Philbin still hasn't sent back my distributor. I must have called a dozen times at this point. Ive just given it another 3 weeks without contacting them to see what would happen - and NOTHING. I honestly can't suggest using them anymore.
I'll call again tomorrow and just ask, again, to PLEASE send it back - even if they never fixed or swapped the vacuum can in any way. I don't even care if they ever really rebuild the distributor itself, I just want it back now. This Tony character they have working for them has been a huge pain in the ass to work with.
