Would a battey tender hooked to the battery under the rear seat of a Beetle create enough hydrogen gas to be cause for concern?

Hydrogen gas primarily gets generated at full charge *with a charger still pumping in electrons*. Just do a top-off charge with car windows open at first day of storage. Then disconnect the negative terminal and let it sit. Charge 24 hours at 2 amps before you need to use it.

I do not even bother with that in the crusty old barn. My cars have held battery charges all winter for years, just by disconnecting the negative terminal. This does depend on a full charge at start of storage period.
