Scintilla Magneto

Post by ruckman101 » Sat May 19, 2012 7:19 pm

Anyone know anything about these things? Point gap, how to time, that sort of stuff.

The engine on the saw mill sports one, and it's been having some starting and idling issues.

It's a new beast to me, and a quick google didn't get me much info.

Compression is good, points aren't pitted, spark plugs didn't look horrific or overly worn, wires look decent, spark was there. Cleaned the contacts in the cap and buffed up the rotor, but still nothing.

"starting and idling issues" how does that resolve with "still nothing"? Won't start?
"spark was there" what kind of spark? A good 5/16" snap of a blue spark, or only a 1/4" yellowish spark?

Fuel? Have you tried a gas prime, or does it have a manual choke? Horrific plugs overly worn, is not really specific enough. Set the gaps to a cleaned .025". Any tan? All black? Some white? We are in the dark here.

Magneto went to the shop, Dick threw a distributor of some kind on there and it's running better than ever ... on the battery.

Here's the Mini Mite at work.

All the lumber for our house was ripped on this sawmill from logs harvested on the property. Some of the log you see here will become new stair treads for the place. Nice log. Tight growth rings. Someone else's, but Dick gets half the lumber that the saw mill rips in payment.

I remember that little engine. I wondered if it was sad not to be able to drive around, but it sure does have a better view than most VW engines . . .

It does get to go back and forth on the rail there. I think it's pretty darn happy to be able to work so hard.
