3 rib transmission: what's it worth

Post by yondermtn » Tue Jan 13, 2009 11:08 am

I got a 3 rib trans as a bonus when I bought my bus. The seller lost his storage and basically wanted to unload it.

I don't really have the space for it.

What vehicle did these transmissions originally come from?
If I sell it, what should I ask?

It has the axles but the boots are shot and both axles are broken off about 6 inches from the trans.

Any sense in keeping it? I have a '77 bus, which I think uses a 6 rib, correct?

These things are only going to increase in value. If it is a good transmission, I think $350.00 is fair. But be prepared for an adjustment to the buyer if it pops out of any gear or grinds into second or howls on deceleration.
They were used in the '68-'74 buses.

What's in the '75? I thought this was 002 also. For some reason I thought the 091 came around with the 2 liter engines.

350 is steep out yonder in oregon. a lot of dune buggy guys love them at $0-200 and shred them south of florence like bags of potato chips. any much more money and i'd consider german transaxle in bend. fantastic place, been there and got the tour, drove the country, loved the tranny.

AW 1975 1800 (fuel-injected)
ED 1975 2000

1975s are also a one year only 002 maincase with 5 larger ribs vs. the 3 ribbed earlier cases.

I've come across a few posts about transmission numbers, ribs etc and thought ooh... let me go look at what I have.

Results are:

5 ribs
Number on the front casing starts 002 xxx xxx A
AW 1800 twin PDSIT engine
1974 Westfalia

Could the 1975 only year have included some lat 74's as well? Or is this just some more facts to add to the mix??
