1700cc with 6 rib trans?

Post by Ryno » Thu Aug 21, 2008 7:20 am

I have a 72 camper with a AVP 1700cc rebuild and the stock trans.

Will an upgrade to the 6 rib lower my hwy RPM's and increase shift points?

Anyone out there running this combo?

Opinions?...Good swap or not worth my time?...I understand the clutch and flywheel may be different?

Please enlighten me...

Do not screw around with lowering highway rpms for your subjective listening comfort. You will end up with a dog on the hills and heating due to increased cylinder head loads with no needed increase in fan speed. The factory was a smart bunch. When you upgrade to a 1800 with 10% more torque, then you can graduate to a later transmission, but even then, you don't want the 6-rib ratios, you want to take advantage of the earlier engines' abilities to rev more freely.
