Tranny/bell housing leak

Post by Ritter » Sun Jun 22, 2008 8:01 am

I pulled the engine for general cleaning and a new clutch for my Itinerant visit in early July. I'm also replacing those seals that make sense to replace (front/rear seals, oil cooler seals, push rod seals, dist o-ring). Looking at the tranny side of the bell housing, there is a definite leak. No nasty smell so likely from the engine side, correct? Here are two photos of the offending area.

So, the question is, can I change the seal on the transmission side input shaft (correct wording?)? If so, can someone direct me to the appropriate parts?

Also, is cleaning this area with gum out ok?

Thanks!

The black stuff is clutch dust....Sure you can clean it w/ carb cleaner or just about anything. I do not know about the input shaft seal.
Take care,

If it is pooling up in there the sniff test will tell you what it is.

Stinky=80/90 gear oil
Not so stinky=rear main seal leak

FYI red dust in there= bad TO bearing in case you ever run into that.

yes, change the input seal as its really easy to do. Plus install a new throwout bearing...

clean clean everything...pull the starter and clean that and all its wire connections....reinstall with a tad of grease on the bearing. :cheers:
