Packing front Bearings

Post by hambone » Wed May 28, 2008 11:18 am

Do all of you with drum brakes pack the drum cavity (hub) with grease? What are yer thoughts on this?
A can of worms. The debate rages:

I put a good amount in my hub, wouldn't call it packing though.

The controversy is created by people with nothing better to do. Grease is cheap, Bentley says do it, pack it in...

The only deviation from the Bentley that I allow is to use less grease when I pack with molybdenum disulfide grease. Lithium, I follow it to the letter. Moly pours at a lower viscosity, so I want it to have some space when things get warm in there. This is strictly real-world experience where I had leakage out the dust cap if i packed it too full. I love the way that moly flows in to the bearings when it gets warm. The lithium seems to develop a hard dam when it boils off the lighter elements over time and hot operation, and I have seen bearings go dry even with a packed hub. The moly always keeps the bearings lubricated.

This happened to me too..I packed the hell out of it which was a mistake. This time was much more conservative. The seals were going bad too which contributed....grease soaked pads, what a drag. Or lack of.
New cylinders and flex hoses too! It's nice to have new brakes.

Be specific, young Hambone. . . are you talking about pads or shoes? With drum brakes, it is shoes for you. VW takes pains to tell you not to pack the dust caps. U.S. cars often did tell you to pack the dust caps as a dust shield and additional lubrication. Not us.
