tranny rebuild

Post by Bleyseng » Sun Mar 16, 2008 5:32 pm

Finally finishing my 091 tranny rebuild...started it in Sept and other projects have kept my from completing it. Scott from German Supply rented me the 241a tool so I could adjust the shift levers. Worked sweet!
Now to button it up and re-install the damn thing so I can reinstall the motor for spring.

Working on the tranny wasn't too hard compared to other types of units I have worked on. :drunken:

Problems with this one were never having the oil changed and it being very low. This required the top bearings to be replaced but the rest of the gears and synchcros were in excellent shape.

Can you tell us more about building up the shafts/hubs/synchros and setting the ring and pinion? Enquiring minds would like to expand their repetoire. :cyclopsani:

here is the gear sets in the 241a tool after setting the shift forks. The 241a tool is the big steel plate with various holes punched in it for different applications.

this is a pic of the burned out bearing, basically destroyed. The tranny had a high pitched whine in 1st and 2nd mostly, drove me nuts driving it around. The needles were flattened and the inner cage destroyed. The previous owner never had the tranny oil changed and I think its the original oil. Bus has only 114k miles on it so the gears sets and such are nice.

ALWAYS check the fluid levels!! change the oil every 30k or sooner.

Props to you on rebuilding your own transmission. Have you done that before?

I was too timid to do mine, so I sent it off to AA Transaxle in Duvall, WA (http://www.aatransaxle.com/). Daryl did a great job for me at a reasonable price with a great warranty.

Take the time to check your shift rod bushings while the tranny is out if you haven't already. New repo bushings are poor (see pics in my gallery) but can be made to work with a little whittling. With tight bushings and a rebuilt transmission, our buses shift almost like a new BMW.

Let us know how it all works/sounds once you get it back in.

I have rebuild a few 901 trannys so this is my first bus tranny. Pretty easy following the books and I had access to a press to remove gears etc.

Would you do a transmission with me? I want to do the Squareback's. We could do an official write-up and heck, buy an Itinerant Air-Cooled jig and rent it out to other enterprising forum members.

it would be fun but I have no idea how we could schedule it. I have no time now for even finishing putting the Westy back together plus I have to make another trip for business to South America this summer....that sucks up my time..

I hope to make it to the Dechutes Camping thing for sure thou. :drunken:
