kickdown adjustment for auto tranny

Post by Gypsie » Thu Jul 19, 2007 6:51 am

I have recently obtained a 1980 vanagon with an automatic. When I got the vehicle there were many many homeboy-kinda-fixed-mechanicals.
The throttle cable was clamped to the throttle rather than being free to slide with the 'override' spring (there was no spring or circlip). I got the spring and circlip and adjusted the throttle cable to spec.

I cannot get the tranny to kick down without using the shifter. I figger I will have to do some adjustin' at the tranny throttle cable junction. Any pointers?
So it all started when I wanted to get better gas mileage....

Fortunately and unfortunately I haven't had to adjust mine yet. I have done a couple on different cars though and it was just a matter of adjusting the action on the kickdown lever to the shifter clicks.

I know the Bentley has an auto section and they do mention the kickdown.....maybe we can tinker with it on the 28th?

sounds good. doesn't seem to be too troublesome since I don't try blastin' around folk too often anyway.

I have to say that after this weekend to Hambone Springs, the Auto Tranny is growing on me (a dyed in the wool manual tranny man).
We glided there and back!
