Hi All
Strange things are a foot in my garage! I changed my rear bearings in my 1970 westy 1000 miles ago. Just put on new shoes this week, and after a good torquing on the rear nut, my wheel had a slight play in it. After taking the wheel off again there was no play on stub axle!!! What indeed could be happening? Ihad a single shim between backing plate and drum due to rubbing. Could this be the problem?
Any help much appreciated as my patience is slowly dropping.
Thank you

Re: Rear wheel play
Hi there,
Did you check the torque on the big axle nut 100-200 miles after installing the new parts?
I'm assuming the play is axial, (in and out,) correct? Or is it radial, (up and down?)
Robbie

Re: Rear wheel play
That is typical of older buses. You may not feel it when the car is unloaded. The only thing we want to avoid is spinning of the outer bearing races in the housings. If the bearings themselves have a little play, you could still have 100,000 miles more ... if you used good grease.

Re: Rear wheel play
Thanks Colin all my new spares came today, so I will take out bearings and check for marks caused by spinning.
Thank you Dave

Re: Rear wheel play
I cleaned the housing dry dry dry, and installed my rear wheel beings with a slather of stud and bearing mount red LocTite. I have no idea if it helped ....
