Transaxle oil changes do a world of good for beginning-to-crunch synchros. When the oil gets old with a lot of suspended metal particles/sludge, the synchros lose badly needed friction. Then you get more clashing, more metal particles. Use simple GL-4 gear oil. The HEY EVERYBODY WE'RE SLIPPIERER SO YOU RUN COOL!! oils suck.

Meh, whadda I know? Jes' seen it happen myself more than once, and the boss and his old boss have seen it many times. We won't change the oil in really beat trannies as policy here at the shop, because the next thing that happens is a blown trans, followed by a call to German T.A. followed by whining that the "new" $1500 tranny "hums" too, won't go into gear easily, or grinds into second... Not blaming GTA, Ken knows his stuff, but like everything else on these things good cores are a thing of the past, so good parts are hard to come by.

That said, if you just happen to have $1500 burning a hole in the wallet, and your trans merely hums in fourth a bit, send it to Ken now, while it's still possibly in relatively good shape, to have that unit itself rebuilt.
