Never. I told people right after our RandyInMaine visit in 2006(?) not to take apart their fabulous factory-assembled fans, you are looking for imbalance and trouble, did anyone in the United States listen to me? NOOOOOooooooOO.

I hereby swear that in my 25 years of Type IV-powered Bus ownership that I have never never ever even CONSIDERED disassembling the cooling fan!!!! (However, I cannot be held responsible for the ridiculous and stupid actions of previous owners.) :salute:

(Oh, and no clunky endplay either! :profileleft: )

And red Loctite for us fools that did tear them apart. :study:

I can see why (now) its a bad idea to take them apart. Too many of us that probably have following RAtwell's restoration.

It may be good idea to have something added to your book on this little tidbit. Unless, of course, you already have done so!

vwlover77 wrote:Well, I have to admit, the whole endplay thing had me really nervous. Tonight I popped the belt off and was getting ready to set up my dial indicator for some measurements when I noticed one of the nuts on the fan perimeter was loose..... Hmmmmm...... Clue!

I took the fan off and discovered that the bolt was loose enough to collide and rub on the fan shroud behind it. Apparently when it was clicking, pressing the clutch pushed the fan just far enough away that the rubbing stopped. And maybe a quick clutch release popped the bolt far enough back into position that the noise went away for a while.

All bolts tightened, fan installed, problem solved!!!!!
