Are there any 'gotchas' that I should now before I buy a used 3 rib transmission for my '73 bus? Besides, of course, not know the condition of the trans. Are there any compatibility issues between the different years? etc.

Thanks.

It is an 002 which bridges 1968-1974 model years. It needs the bell housing with the supports introduced in 1972 for the Type 4 engine. Other than that, you should be good to go.

If needed, I can swap the bellhousing off of my existing/nonfunctioning transmission that is currently on the '73, no?

If youtube is to believed, it should be no problem...bet I get some interesting pictures of the guts of the old trans too!

Is the input shaft longer on the T4 variants as well? That looks like something that can be swapped as well...

That looks like a 6 rib in chitwn's ad example.

This is a 5 rib:

The 5 ribs have that sharp edge that also gave rise to the name "pyramid" transaxle.
