Animated Engine Innards

Post by Bookwus » Sat Jan 02, 2010 1:32 pm

Hiya All,

I recently ran across these small gifs and I thought they might be of use to some who were trying to visualize the insides of the VW engine in movement. Take a look................

Those are excellent.
Quiz question:
Which cam lobe is illustrated in upper gif?

Extra Credit:
What disastrous mechanical failure is evident in upper gif?

I don't have a clue, but I sure could sit and watch that crank go round and round for hours - kinda hypnotizing. I guess that means it is official, I'm a vw nerd. Thanks BOOKWUS.

That is really cool, hypnotic to watch. Amazing to see it like that, the mechanical flow that someone dreamed up. Horizontal power transferred to rotary.

I don't know which lobe. It opens up the exhaust valves though.

Mechanical failure, 1/2 the engine is missing, including the belt. Is the fan spinning backwards? Man it's messing with my head. And what's that aardvark doing in the bottom of the case? Crazy man.

Imminent engine destruction due to no oil in the sump?

Imminent engine destruction due to faulty thermostat?

Hammie's right! exhaust lobe is shown - it's fairly easy to discern the compression stroke, followed by ignition spark, then the exhaust valve closest to the viewer opens and the piston travels back to TDC pushing exhaust gasses out of the cylinder.

no clue on the pending failure!

ditto on the great gifs - thanks Bookwus!

Yesh yesh, it is the #2/4 Exhaust Lobe.

The imminent mechanical catastrophe is clearly that the cam saddles are shot, you all see how wobbly that camshaft is, yaah? The 1200s did not have relaceable bearing shells either.
