Stuck Oil Plug

Post by westy78socal » Thu Nov 09, 2006 5:20 pm

I'm having a heck of a time getting my oil drain plug loose to change the oil. Any suggestions? When I crank on it I can feel the bus weight shift a bit but it won't give.

We can better help you if you tell us what size bolt head and even what style. Some later Type 4 engines have 6mm allen head drain bolts.
If you have the more usual 17mm shouldered bolt head, warm up the engine thoroughly, good and warm under there, and put on a 17mm socket with an adapter and breaker bar. Let the heat flow from the bolt into your socket for a minute, then crack it loose with a good sharp punch to the end of the breaker bar.
