Motel 6 parking lot Fan Hub Seal Replacement...

Post by 73Kombi » Tue Sep 08, 2009 2:45 pm

Ok, it's my first post here, but last week I had the OIL EVERYWHERE leak, on a road trip thru Missoula.

I decided to start with the fan hub seal, as this seemed likely. The local Orielly FLAPS lent me a puller (free) albeit too big for the proper job. (it was difficult to use the stock M8x40 fan hub bolts with the puller) I had only 2 M8x50 bolts in my box that saved the day!

All was going fine until one of the 12pt socket heads was stripped, that holds on the fan, so off to Lowe's I went. I picked up this 90deg drill adapter from Lowe's for $20, and a titanium hex-head bit (it's chuckless), and an extractor...total cost, $26. (they don't rent tools at lowe's here)
I returned the 90deg adapter the next day and got my $20 back!

The drilling was a surprisingly short <3 minute job...

The extractor worked perfect. You can see the oil everywhere!

I didn't have, or know about the O-ring, but it has appeared to STOP the oil from blowing all thru the fan shroud! (and all over EVERYTHING)

I picked up 3 hex head M8x40 socket bolts at Motana Bolt and replaced those crappy 12pt bolts the next day...

They are SO much better than the 12pt'ers IMHO.

Thank you Motel 6, and Tom Bodett (we'll keep a shower hot for your greasy hands), for allowing me to stay and fix Bessie in your parking lot!

That qualifies for Battle-Scarred Road Warrior Fix: Promarksman.
To obtain your Sharpshooter classification, you will need to replace one piston only, or replace a rocker shaft with a tent pole and drive at least two miles.
