Head/Exhaust Stud Pulled Out - 1972 Bus

Post by Sluggo » Fri Jun 19, 2009 11:20 am

I've had a pulled exhaust stud for a while now. Gonna fix it when I drop the engine to transplant into the '77. I ordered a metric tap & die set off of eBay. The only studs I could find were at CIP1 ($1.95). This leads to 2 questions.

1. Are the CIP1 studs good? I know a lot of their stuff is crap.

2. It's a 2 liter Type 4 with FI heads. Are the stock studs 8x9x38? Should the replacement stud be 8x10x38?

Will you be using a step stud or drilling out the HE manifold?

I've had luck at a good hardware stores finding auto grade studs. all sorts of sizing and thread pitch...
So it all started when I wanted to get better gas mileage....

Step Stud. That's why I need to make sure the thread on the head is 9mm so I can step up to 10mm. If it's 8mm I can step up to 9mm.

Hey Sluggo

Juts had the same thing happen to me. While trying to remove the heat exchanger.
Think my studs are 9/8, but what I was considering was to drill out seized stud and helicoil back to original size.
Is this a good idea or is it better having a 10/8 stepped stud?

Similar situation happened to me last week expect it was a manifold stud. I used a helicoil kit from Napa and it worked like a charm. I reused the original stud and didn't have to deal with size changes. It's a little more pricey than going with a step stud though.

While Colin was here we pulled the exchanger and checked out the stud. It is an 8x9. I'll be going the helicoil route (as Colin suggested). Mostly because I had a hard time finding a 10x8 stud.
