Rebuilt Heads

Post by hambone » Sun Dec 28, 2008 9:23 am

I'm taking the heads back that I recently bought from Halsey Automotive. What I thought was bead blasting was actually alum. spray paint. One of the exhaust studs is loose, and now I see someone chiseled the aluminum around the stud to hold it tighter. Wow! I didn't notice this at first, took some careful inspection. I got too many parts at once, it was a bit overwhelming.

Think I'm going with these instead:

Hiya Bob,

Oh man, ya' gotta be careful when dealing with Halsey. It's strictly a caveat emptor kinda place as far as I'm concerned.

I got my heads out at Bill Trafton's place and had Dan Hall recondition them. Very nice.

Heads were $70 at Bill's and $175 at Dan Halls. Comes down to about $125 a head.
I have cancer.

It does not have me.

That's not bad at all. I may go that route too, at least I'll be confident.
I want to have a second pair on hand just in case, so I'll get my current heads rebuilt when I can swing it.

Warning against AutoLinea heads from Brazil. The flashing from the mating line of the dies blocks all the cooling slots. The hardware may be suspect as well, the seats are not the best and the aluminum is soft.
It is in the "belatedly discovered junk" sticky at the top of this forum.

Halsey took back the heads. My Chicago experiences of "return?!?!?!!? Go F yourself howya like dat?" made me fret a bit. But I didn't even have to spin any marvelous tales.
Halls it is! I'll just get my current heads rebuilt and get some junkers some rainy day. (thanks again Mike for the advice)

Please keep the daily diary stuff to a minimum here in the Technical Forums.
Your technical questions are doing a fine job of filling out the database, but. . .

But, this is detailing an experience with a local VW FLAPS, as well as quality issues and their return policy. Isn't that relevant?

Yes. Might be a good Type 2 forum conversation. Here, we (and I mean me as well as anyone else) need to keep it more technical.
