There is tremendous variability depending on machining options, quality of parts, quality of vendor, what is needed by your engine, but my guess runs between 1 and 2 thousand dollars. A quicky head job on the side of the road can be less than $100.00 if you get a single part, like my exhaust valve seat for the Squareback last winter. . . valve $8.99 new seat shrunk in the head $55.00, gasket set $18.99, labor free.

You may wish to rephrase that.

Or if you have to buy almost everything look at more like $4 to $6 thousand. For quality parts that is.......this will start to make you wonder about "turnkey" engines for $2 to $4 thousand......um, yeah. I wouldn't go there.

Oh man, don't say that. It has been a while since I last did the thorough rebuild. . .

Maybe for mr. fancypants over there. I went stock 1600, German whenever available, all decent quality stuff otherwise. I'm in just above 2k. Will be a bit more once I get the heads and balancing back from the shop. There's no way in hell it's any way close to 4-6k for a stock type1 build. I'm even using a new case, most rebuilds don't, just an align bore if needed. And a counterweighted crank.
Ya gotta be frugal tho. Wrecking yards for tin/bits, local gurus like Bill Trafton, where you get underside cylinder ducting and a thermostat with linkage for a total of $10. Junkyard doghouse tin and German oil cooler and adapter set me back $20, Samba classifieds for bits like Hoover and underside little head tin.
Also rebuilt my fuel pump, carb and generator instead of buying new. But it would only add about $300 to the total.
Headflowmasters sells a long block for a grand, and they are a very reputable biz. I almost went that route, but I wanted balancing etc.

Type4 on the other hand will probably be closer to that 4k up mark.

i built a type 4 for about $2k as well. Though, my rods and pistons were out of brazil and deutschland. I could have easily spent a lot more, buttttt I went the mid-level range for my first rebuild.

So parts have roughly doubled since I last overhauled in 2002. . . . :blackeye:

Mine has been all the bits to assemble an engine though, including induction which is about $1400 for a good set of heads, carbs and manifolds. I imagine if I were to rebuild the engine I am building know it would prolly be in the $1500 to $2000 range......

For example:
Heads $750
Crank $300
Cam $130
Lifters $95
Bearings $75
Machine/shop work $200
Misc $300

So right there without skimping on any part (and actually going for the higher end of the spectrum on the heads and crank) you would have aboot $2k.

I'll post all my expenses and the parts I got when I am done so someone else can just subtract the parts they don't need and get a good idea of what they might be looking at and then they can make all ten million choices on how much to spend on what.

Your heads are insane-expensive, and the crank is about 100 more than I paid, etc. It costs a hell of a lot more to do hi perf which is one of the reasons I stayed stock. Those dual carbs must be expensive too....

I'm using all new parts too, with the exception of a few bits sourced from the old engine. My pockets are smaller than yours!

i spent $750 on headflow masters heads. why? b/c my shatty GEX heads were the reason my bus went kaput before.

it's all relative.
