Type1 Crankshaft
Forged and rebuilt stock,
or
Cast new?
I'm leaning towards forged. Just seems to be higher quality.

I read somewhere that the weights welded on to counterweight a crank are unreliable and can come off. Is this paranoia?
I plan on getting everything balanced so that will help.
Thanks much.

I'm thinking of going with this kit, and the crank upgrade:

I am all for a stock forged crankshaft accurately machined, radiused with a slight relief at the journal edges, and balanced.

Excellent.
I'm asking these many inane questions because
1. Somebody has to
2. The tech section needs more info
3. I really want to know.
So in the spirit of sharing information I thank you all. Your fat juicy brains dripping with ancient VW knowledge is my liberation.

Ooooooooo I got my snazzy couterweighted crank today! Very emotional as I held the very heart of the new engine. Call me crazy but it felt special.
Also got a bunch of engine bits from OE VEEDUB what a great place, mostly German stuff. Funny how much better the engine gasket kit is, compared to Brazilian.
Soon I will have to do something.

You are amongst people who share your awe with such things. I have had my major engine pieces laid out in the kitchen and dining room just marvelling that they would soon be taking me across the country.hambone wrote: snazzy couterweighted crank

Ah yes, the "do something" threshold.
