Starting engine after a few years...

Post by MalibuLx3 » Thu Sep 21, 2006 3:26 pm

Here is what I plan in doing to see if I can get my type 1 engine running. It has been sitting for awhile, but ran a few years ago. Please make any comments, changes, or remarks you feel...

Remove all 4 spark plugs, squirt oil down cylinders, and replace with 4 new spark plugs. Turn it over then by hand.

Drain gasoline, and pull off all old fuel lines.

Remove carburetor and rebuilt with gaskets and jets. Replace when finished.
Hook up with new fuel lines and a new fuel filter.

Remove distributor, grease end of distributor, install new points, condenser, and rotor.

Properly set points.

Reinstall distributor, and static time. Replace the distributor cap also.

Replace the ignition coil, and replace all spark plug wires.

Drain oil

Remove valve covers, and adjust valves. Replace valve covers and fill with oil.

Tell me what you guys think, does this sound like a good plan of action to get the engine running?
Thanks
-Curtis

Change old oil first, even if it is a cold engine.
When you squirt oil in the cylinders, leave the plugs out and crank for oil pressure as you allow the oil to splash the cylinder walls. The higher cranking speed with the plugs out is better for oil distribution on the cylinder walls as well as helping you celebrate the oil light going out.
The rest looks fine.
