Oh no! Oil screen studs

Post by jeromeaircooled » Wed Jun 06, 2007 9:19 pm

I am working on the 1600 dp that is intended for my beetle. The car is one of those "ran when parked" given to me for free deals. I pulled the engine to clean it and put new, freshly repainted tins on it to try to squeeze as much life out of it as I can. Today I noticed that one of the oil screen studs was broken off and the metal piece that holds it was quite bent, so I decided to replace it with a spare that I had. When torqueing the bolts I snapped two more off. $*%@! I didn't even get them to the 5 ft lbs bentley calls for. Is this a deal killer? I suppose the engine will leak like crazy. Can I drill them out or will I have to split the case?

I'm pretty sure they can be carefully drilled out with the engine in the car. Someone here asked that same question recently.

Ask Sluggo about time-serts. He just did one and ( so far) it looks like he was successful.

we have these really cool studs for repairing the stripped sump stud holes. these are genuine NOS VW parts. a bit pricey, but probably cheaper that a timesert kit if you only need a few. i use these myself and they work really well. these used to be available from VW, but they are long gone. the ones we have are NOS.
